Chicago Recap | Personal Post | Traveling Child Photographer

Hello friends and dreamers!

So as some of you know, I spent my last birthday in Australia. And while it was so incredible being there, my birthday was rather melancholy due to homesickness. So this year my husband surprised me with a weekend trip to Chicago to visit one of my very best friends, Tyrie. She is a wedding, engagement, and maternity photographer at her business Tyrie Mehaffey Photography in the Chicago suburbs. We’ve been friends for nearly 5 years and only get to see each other about once a year so it was amazing to spend time with her and have her show me around Chicago! I also shot a stunning Daydream session while I was there (coming Wednesday). Allll precautious were taken and I’ve passed the two-week mark and am COVID free. I’m definitely not recommending traveling willy-nilly but it was truly a blessing to get to spend time with a dear friend and re-explore the city I grew up in.

I did want to highlight the flight though! Unfortunately, they fully booked the plane, so we were all quite crammed in there, but everyone was wearing their masks and security went much faster which is always a lovely occasion. People were also trying to keep several seats in between them and the other party which I greatly appreciated! All in all, a good flight experience, despite the circumstances. But I had my Calpack + Kamrette bag combo (non-affiliate links, but they take you right to my go-to photography travel bags), and I was off!

The first day was mostly catching up with Tyrie and resting after the travel day. I actually grew up in Cary (about an hour NW of Downtown) and lived there for the first 7 years of my life. We ended up driving out to see it on Thursday evening which was such a dream come true.

Friday was sightseeing! When I lived in IL I had really only gone to the city a couple of times, so I was seeing it all new. We drove through downtown and then had a taco picnic at the UChicago campus.

I was BLOWN AWAY by the sheer beauty!

If you live in North Texas, you know that there is nowhere that can achieve this level of immaculate and lush greenery.

We stayed at the U for a couple of hours until the heat took us both. But, beforehand, we got so many photos of each other in front of the beautiful ivy-covered buildings.

Then came what was arguably my favorite day of the trip: DAYDREAM DAY! But first,

Smoothie bowls.

I have to admit, this was only my second smoothie bowl in my entire life, but I would highly recommend getting the Hilltopper the Joy Bar in downtown Glen Ellyn! I definitely want to make it a Chicago shoot day tradition in the travel shoots to come!

Anyways, back to Emma’s Daydream! The official blog for her session is going up on September 1, but there was no way I could leave it out of this post.

For this shoot, I had the most amazing opportunity to shoot in a stunning house. Y’all, I could’ve lived here and felt like I fulfilled my dreams. There was so much creamy light coming in through the molded windows and across the pale floor. I was in love! We had two dresses picked out for her Daydream: a Tutu du Monde and a Cora & Violet. Two absolute stunners and they both got to be photographed for the first time! Emma was so amazing and had one of the best smiles ever! I’ll definitely be sharing more on Wednesday, but for now, I’ll leave you with these cute photos. Thank you Tyrie for taking my BTS and for being an amazing, amazing assistant!

Then, we switched roles! Tyrie had an engagement session that Saturday evening at Wheaton College, so I got to join as her assistant. She is incredible at getting true emotions out of her couples, and I had a blast just watching her be amazing.

That evening we sat and talked about so many things while we worked. It was so restful and much needed after a crazy spring.

I didn’t take many photos on Sunday because we simply drove around and talked and looked at the sights, but overall it was such an incredible trip and I’m so excited to come back to Chicago for more sessions as soon as possible! There are so many more beautiful places I’d love to shoot, so if you’re interested in a session in 2020 or to start planning for one in 2021, contact me!

And thank you Tyrie for helping to make this trip so fantastic! See you soon! <3

Ending it off with the blurry moment where the airplane door had closed and I thought I had a whole row to myself for the first time ever. It was beautiful… Unfortunately, a flight attendant noticed and moved someone up from the back of the plane. The new row-buddy was so nice though, I didn’t even mind!

Sending much love from underneath a pink blanket. When it’s summer and you have a hot-blooded husband, it’s hot during the workday when it’s just me and freezing at night. I absolutely adore him though, so it’s more than worth it! Especially because, who doesn’t love snuggling under a nice pink blanket?

Anyways, talk to you soon! xoxo

Always with much love,
